The Top Five Genome Conferences In The World

The emergence and growth of whole genome sequencing technologies, and the resulting immense database generated, requires that scientists and medical professionals learn more about the powerful tools available to them. These tools give scientists the ability to interpret and apply the information and are becoming increasingly available. Genomic technologies have bolstered the power of personalized medicine and are facilitating drug discovery. A plethora of genomic conferences that focus on a number of themes are available for medical science professionals to share their knowledge and learn more about the genome technologies and the world of genomic science and medicine.

The best genomic conferences provide opportunities and resources to greatly increase working knowledge and help biomedical scientists to stay current on the latest research advances. This allows maximum sharing of ideas and provides information and experience that can be applied to bolster the advancement of health and medicine. Here are five of the top genomic conferences that meet these very important criteria:

The Human Genome Meeting (HGM)

The Human Genome Meeting (HGM) was held this year for the first time in the US in Houston, TX from February 28 – March 2. This conference is rich with knowledge, collaboration, and presentation of areas focusing deeply on medical translation and the application of genomics approaches in all facets of medical delivery including diagnosis and treatment of genetic disease and cancer. It is interdisciplinary drawing expertise from many fields.

Organized by the Human Genome Organization, the HGM is one of the largest and well attended international meetings that focus on genomics as it relates to disease and personalized medicine. This meeting not only features presentations and lectures, but provides workshops focusing on subject matter such as the interpretation of clinical and cancer genomes and functional genomics. The human genome meeting is exceptionally comprehensive covering from genome editing using CRISPR-CAS systems and cancer precision medicine to genetic therapies for rare diseases.

International Festival of Genomics

The International Festival of Genomics is another large global genomics meeting. In 2015, the Boston Conference was their first in the United States where they had outstanding speakers like J. Craig Venter, George Church, and Michael Snyder.  It is scheduled to take place in June of this year at the Boston Convention Center, followed later by festivals in California and London. Featured are experts sharing research and advances in genome data analysis, clinical genomics, and drug development. Discussions regarding medical ethics and the use of CRISPR-Cas9 are also tackled.  Technologies such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) and the growing medical applications are represented by leaders in the industry.

This meeting is structured with unique focus group settings such as the “flying saucer of genomics chat,” stream themes, and “TechForums.” Industry leaders and subject matter experts worldwide converge to discuss the latest advances in genomic technologies and their applications in genomic science and medicine. DNA artistry was even shared through a musical recording by the Kreutzer Quartet encoded into DNA by Dr. Nick Goldman and the artist and filmmaker Charlotte Jarvis.

Lorne Genome conference

Combining medical genomics, disease genomics, epigenetics sessions, and workshops on bioinformatics technology, the Lorne Genome Conference in Australia is another high-impact globally recognized genome conference. World leaders from research centers, hospitals, and universities gather and collaborate to present cutting-edge knowledge in areas such as transcriptomics, epigenomics, and population genetics.  Practical workshops that demonstrate the integration of bioinformatics in NGS team efforts have also been featured.

The sessions confront issues regarding the investigation of rare variants in long-known genetic diseases that continue to elude the medical treatment arena. The recent conference that took place in February of this year covered an interesting variety of subject matter from comparative genomics, computational biology, and developmental Genetics to transcriptional networks.

Natureconferences

Natureconferences are a series of international conferences that cover various areas. What makes this conference collection special is the huge range of subject and specialty areas. For example, high impact conferences focusing on genome medicine are available each year. The Genomics of Common Diseases meeting that takes place yearly is scheduled for September 2016 in Baltimore, MD. This meeting provides opportunities to better understand the use of the newest genomic technologies such as whole genome sequencing and genotyping arrays to decipher mechanisms of diseases and advance translational medicine.

There is also the Genomics of Rare Disease meeting that covers categories of genetic disorders, the genetic basis of rare disease pathophysiology, and treatment approaches. There are a number of other impactful genomic meetings on cancer genomics, epigenetics, and genome variation in medicine, among others that benefit the development of personalized medicine. An international host of organizers and contributors ensure an enriching collaborative experience for attendees.

Gordon Research Conferences

Although not strictly dedicated only to genomics, the Gordon Research Conferences are excellent international academic meetings well known for presenting the most leading-edge research in a number of science fields. This year’s conference that took place in Ventura, CA presented research advances in the understanding of genome instability resulting from environmentally-induced DNA damage. Scientist worldwide presented on a number of specialty areas including molecular genetics, biochemistry, and oncology. Conferences on the basic science of genome organization, nuclear structure, and epigenetics took place in Hong Kong in 2015 and will again in 2017. The aim is to present advanced knowledge supporting clinical molecular biology and disease modeling.

The rapidly growing fields of whole genome sequencing and applications of genomic data in personalized medicine have created the need for collaborative engagement globally to share new technologies, share discovered applications in medicine, and brainstorm about many issues in genomics from the technological challenges to ethical questions that did not exist a short time ago. The discussed conferences are just a sampling of those available but demonstrate those that best achieve the goals to provide continuing education, inform the latest status of genomic science and medicine, and provide platforms to determine how to translate the new knowledge for the enhancement of individual and population health.
